Püre Bathhouse

So the story begins… It started with my sons.  My skin was always pretty normal until I got pregnant, and with each pregnancy my skin became more and more sensitive. A couple months after giving birth to my second son, my skin became extremely itchy and dry, especially after a shower. I tried different commercial bought soaps and lotions but nothing was helping. My mother-n-law suggested I try using handmade soap, so I did. What a difference handmade soap made! My skin cleared up right away. No more itch. No more dryness. All of a sudden a light bulb went off in my head… make my own soap!

Then my curiosity got the better of me and I started researching the difference between commercial soap and handmade soap.  What is Soap? Soap is an anionic surfactant used in conjunction with water for washing and cleaning, which historically comes either in solid bars or in the form of liquid. Soap consists of sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids and is obtained by reacting common oils or fats with a strong alkaline solution (the base, popularly referred to as lye) in a process known as saponification. The fats are hydrolyzed by the base, yielding alkali salts of fatty acids (crude soap) and glycerol. Today, soap is often replaced by other cleaning agents, such as synthetic detergents.

I was shocked to learn that the common commercial soap is actually more of a detergent than a soap and not really good for your skin. Many soaps contain petroleum products, alcohols, preservatives and a lot of other things that you can’t pronounce that will often leave your skin feeling itchy, dry and tight. The natural occurring glycerin is usually stripped from the finished product and used to make moisturizing lotions and other products, which leaves a hard, drying bar of soap.

I went from giving my soap and lotions away as gifts, to having friends and family tell me how much they love it... Püre Bathhouse was born.

I plan on expanding my line into cold process soaps, glycerin soaps, etc. I am currently working on a men's line that will hopefully be launched by November just in time for Christmas. I love creating, experimenting and coming up with new all-natural products... if you're in the Lower Mainland area check out my events page as I start to book my fall craft fairs.
